Treasures Presentation in Chuzhou and Reign Designation of Baoying——Analysis of the Political Histor

Abstract: In April of the first year of Emperor Tang Suzong (namely in April of the first year of Baoying), the prefectural governor of Chuzhou Cui Shen submitted a report to the emperor, which said a nun named Zhen Ru got thirteen treasures given by God. The related historical records are divided into two categories. One is about the specific species and the number of treasures presented in Chuzhou, which is recorded in some history books written in biographical style such as New History of the Tang Dynasty, Book of Tang and History as a Mirror. The other is about the detailed process of Zhen Ru presenting the treasures and the modification of the specific species and the number of treasures which is recorded in ancient books and records such as Tai Ping Guang Ji. Because presenting treasures in Chuzhou occurred in the specific historical background of Rebellion of An and Shi, in order to fully understand and interpret this event, we need to comb the details based on central and local political situations in the last years of Emperor Tang Suzong. The auspicious jade in Chuzhou can be regarded as one kind of compound auspicious sign, which contains back-to-the-ancients ideology of Emperor Tang Suzong and many other significances such as suppressing the Rebellion of An and Shi.
