Abstract: In his own time,Longfellow gradually won for himself,both at home and abroad,the undisputed top place in American letters.He has had defenders in every age.This paper discusses why Longfellow is so popular with the help of two concepts in reception theory,one is meaning indeterminacy and the other is expectation horizon.
