Abstract: From the articles about the Japanese invasion of Taiwan in Shenbao of 1874 we can see that Shenbao insisted on independent opinion on the vigilance to Japan, the motivation and excuse of the Japanese invasion and the attitude towards Taiwan affairs, which is quite different from the governmental opinions.
