Three Passes in Yiyang and their names can be dated back to the three forts named Ming E, Zhi Yuan and Da Sui since the Spring and Autumn. In fact, the expression "Three Passes in Yiyang", advanced in Southern Liang Dynasty, was a good depiction of the relationship between Three Passes and the geographical position in Eastern Jin, Song and Qi Dynasty, and became their conventional names since then.
