Abstract: In the study of the form and structure of Chinese characters,it is of great significance to study the structural components,including their unique symbol system or their unique function of expressing and recognition.XU Shen was the forerunner of such a study characterized by the following contributions.First,he established radicals in a system of "form and meaning categories".Second,he adopted scientific methods in material selecting and research.These have influenced the later researchers.
