The “zhuan xiang(馔飨)” in the eyes of others—The Relationship between Chinese Diet Culture and Image Shaping as Seen in the “Record of Peking’s Travels”of the Joseon Dynasty

摘要: 《燕行录》中记载的中国饮食文化与作为“他者”的朝鲜使臣所塑造的中国形象之间存在关联。出使沿途所见明清中国的“馔食”,是朝鲜使臣对彼时中国形象认知的“透镜”;参加的各式“宴飨”,也是其与中国人交流的重要媒介。中国的饮食文化是中华优秀传统文化中不可或缺的一部分,可以看作是在其他民族语境中建构中国形象的一种认知体系。从中国饮食文化的角度,使用比较文学形象学的研究方法分析朝鲜使臣眼中中国形象的塑造过程是非常有必要的。Abstract: There was a correlation between the Chinese diet culture recorded in the “Record of Peking’s Travels”and the image of China portrayed by the Joseon envoys as the ‘others’ . The “zhuan xiang(馔飨)”of Ming and Qing dynasties that the Joseon envoys saw along the way was the “lens”through which they perceived the image of China at that time. The various “banquets”that they attended were also an important medium for communicating with the Chinese people. Chinese diet culture is an indispensable part of the Chinese excellent traditional culture and can be seen as a cognitive system for constructing the image of China in other ethnic contexts. From the perspective of Chinese diet culture, it is highly necessary to analyze the process of shaping China’s image in the eyes of Joseon envoys using the research method of comparative literature imagology.
