科举制度与中国重教传统的形成——基于家庭角色的视角

摘要: 科举制度的诞生,使士子向上流动的渠道由门阀政治统摄下的家族荐举转为科举考试主导下的家庭应举,即士子的个人举业实现了从家族控制到家庭扶持的下移,这种下移推动了知识学习的平民化,也促进了社会流动的开放化。基于家庭角色的视角,可以发现在科举时代,“人重科举,士竟帖括”,整个家庭呈现出以举业为核心的别样家庭图景。一方面,科举及第是“全家之喁望”,家庭成员在经济支持、家庭教育、精神鼓舞等方面表现出极大的向心力,并潜移默化地推动中国形成了重教传统;另一方面,由于科名之重,全家所系,以致举子陷入“举业”与“家业”难以兼顾的困境之中,举子应举的踟蹰、家庭角色的长期缺位体现了整个举业家庭的无奈与辛酸。科举制度就像一把“双刃剑”,在造就少数个体及其家庭荣光时,也导致了无数个体及其家庭的悲哀。Abstract: The birth of the imperial examination system changed the channel of upward mobility of scholars from the recommendation under the political control of the community with the same blood to taking the imperial examination supported by the single family, that is, the personal education of scholars realized the downward movement from community control to family support. This downward movement not only promoted the popularization of knowledge learning, but also promoted the opening of social mobility. From the perspective of family role, it can be found that in the era of imperial examinations, everyone tries hard to study for the imperial examinations, and the whole family presents a different family picture with the imperial examination as the core. On the one hand, passing the imperial examinations becomes the earnest hope of the whole family, with family members showing great centripetal force in terms of economic support, family education, spiritual inspiration, etc., and is subtly promoting the formation of the tradition of emphasizing education in China; on the other hand, due to the heavy burden, the candidates for the imperial examinations fall into the difficult dilemma of “taking the examinations” and “supporting family”, which reflects the helplessness and bitterness of the whole family. The imperial examination system is like a “double-edged sword”, which does not only bring glory to a few individuals and their families, but also cause sorrow to countless individuals and families.
