Abstract: Small talk, as a unique form of literary criticism in Chinese style, has broken away from the traditional aesthetic judgment of ancient Chinese literary theory, and begun to pay great attention to such important theoretical propositions as the shaping of the typical character of the novel, and typical process of "representative meaning" "universal meaning" and "typification", etc. Therefore, the discussion on "typification" in small talk in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China not only shows the connotation and interpretation of the theoretical construction of typification of novels, but also reflects the important aspect of the modern transformation of traditional literary theory.
