Abstract:
Haoyisi and
Buhaoyisi are a pair of opposites. The latter literally means sorry or embarrassed in a certain context. The former semantically relies on the latter and syntactically relies on its negation expression. The former is used only in the negative structure constituted by
bu or
mei (no), or in the counter-expectation constructions. The dependence of the former is due to its diachronic evolution, and its lexicalization is later than that of
Buhaoyisi. In fact, the former is generated from the latter in rhetorical sentences.
