Abstract: In order to investigate the influence of design experience on individual mental representation in solving mechanical design problems, the expert-novice paradigm was used to compare the use of different types of mental representation by senior engineers (experts) and mechanical students (novices) with years of working experience in completing a mechanical engineering design activity.The results indicate that novices use more mental representations in solving design problems than experienced experts, and that analogical representations play an important role in problem solving.
