Abstract: Yan Zhen's novel Because as a Woman describes the harm brought to women by the commercialization of women's bodies and marriages in the era of market economy, and reveals the reasons for the tragic fate of women's personality. The gender essentialism stance of the novel has drawn criticism from feminists, which has its inevitability, but also has misunderstanding. The reality of female existence shown in the work should cause feminists to reflect on it.
