Abstract: Verbal humor is a special way of human information transmission and plays an important role in human communication. As a new model of discourse analysis, Default Semantics provides a new interpretation for the mechanism of verbal humor. By analyzing language materials of verbal humor under Default Semantics, the results show that the truth-conditional content is inconsistent with its implication and the inferring meaning is inconsistent with its default meaning are mechanisms of verbal humor.
