The Aesthetic Divisions of Mirror Images from the Perspective of Comparative Studies Between Chinese and Western Cultures

The mirror image in classical Chinese and Western literature exhibits both cross-cultural homogeneity and inter-civilizational heterogeneity. Its homogeneity is rooted in the shared aesthetic psychology and imaginative mechanisms of humanity， manifesting in three dimensions： self-reflection through “gazing into the mirror”， emotional projection via “expressing emotions through mirrors”， and mystical narratives where “mirrors give rise to myriad phenomena”. Its heterogeneity， however， is deeply embedded in the cultural traditions of each civilization： in terms of form and decoration， Chinese mirrors feature patterns on their backs that carry symbolic meanings and convey profound principles， whereas Western mirrors prioritize simplicity over ornamentation； in terms of self-awareness， Chinese mirrors emphasize ethical introspection， while Western ones focus on the pursuit of truth；These differences highlight fundamental distinctions between the two civilizations in self-awareness， emotional imagination， and the construction of rituals and customs. The underlying causes are closely tied to variations in religious beliefs and cognitive frameworks regarding “objects and the self” between China and the West.
