New Transformations in the Compilation of Literati Literature in the Late Eastern Han Dynasty

  • From the accession of Emperor He of the Eastern Han Dynasty to the 25th year of Jian'an reign of Emperor Xian of Han(220 AD) in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, as a period of social transformation in ancient Chinese history, there were also new changes in the organization of literature. This is not only reflected in the fact that literary works created by scholars have gained equal status with classics, history, and literature as the content of document organization, which has enabled the collection of works to achieve a qualitative leap from being attached to classics, history, and literature to being independent; In the practice of document organization, scholars achieved a perfect combination of annotating words and clarifying the meaning of the text through the use of "annotations" and "chapter sentences", which led to its maturity and standardization; And it is also reflected in the fact that scholars, as the main body of document sorting, have achieved a conscious awareness of engaging in document sorting as a whole. This not only enables scholars to acquire the knowledge, skills, and other qualities required for literary creation, but also provides opportunities for them to engage in literary creation related to the content. It strengthens the connection between literature organization and literary creation, marking a new historical stage in the relationship between the two.
