A Study of Thomas Pynchon's Novels from the Perspective of Ecological Marxism

  • From the view of Ecological Marxism, Pynchon attacks the serious destruction of natural ecology, such as life, natural environment and urban environment driven by capitalist "Man controls Nature" ideology, technical reason and economic reason; exposes war disaster and ethnic slaughter resulted from the anti-ecological and unrighteousness of capitalist system and mode of production, the power and technology conspiring to create a "world of dead people", human materialization and abnormal interpersonal relationship influenced by technical dissimilation from the social ecology aspect; criticizes alienation of human nature, abuse of culture, loss of faith and presence of absurdity due to technology supremacy, materialism and consumerism from the spiritual ecology aspect. To the end, Pynchon puts forward a series of methods to resolve the ecological crisis, expresses his concern for the plight of human existence and post-humanitarian concern, and issues a strong appeal for ecological holism, harmonious sharing, returning to nature, technological ecology, green consumption, cultural diversity, ecological justice and so on, hoping to build a society away from harmful material and ecological disasters, an ecological society that has eliminated racial and gender discrimination, poison and oppression of capitalism.
