On the Aesthetic Value of Dialect Elements in Gao Jianqun's Great Plain

  • Gao Jianqun's Great Plain is a family history, which is based on the author's own family. In the novel, the author's relatives are the main characters of Gao's family in Weihe Plain. In this plain history and family history, the author used a lot of Shaanxi dialect elements. It is worth noting that the author tends to use dialectal elements in different chapters. When describing the vicissitudes of the times and the ups and downs of the family, the author chooses to write in a dialect bearing specific emotions, while in other parts, the author seldom or completely does not use dialectal writing. This tendency is particularly prominent in some chapters about the creation of typical characters and the recall of past events. This tendency can be seen as a way of expression to return home. Driven by thoughts and feelings, the author writes strong local feelings in "natural" language, which makes the novel unique artistic value. With the help of dialect elements to tell stories, the author also finishes a search for spiritual home in the way of local expression.
