On the Essence of Chinese Culture in Ryunosuke Akutagawa's TUTze-chun

  • Ryunosuke Akutagawa wrote the short story TU Tze-chun based on the Tang Legend DU Zichun, both with the same title. It was one of the fruits of Akutagawa's voracious reading of classical Chinese literature. Compared with Tang Legend, TU Tze-chun vividly shows the contradiction and depression of author's inner world during developing the plot and shaping the characters of the novel, which is the description of his spiritual journey of pursuing Chinese classical literature as well. Therefore, it reveals that Japanese writers of the School of New Thought pay attention to the perfect combination of art and narrative of the characters' psychological world.
