Chi You and the Beginning of the Opera in China

  • In Chinese ancient times, the war between Chi You and Huang Di is one of the notable events, from which the Chinese civilization originates. And from then on, the military affairs has became the vital part of people's life. Furthermore, imitating the battle even becomes one of the main sections of the sacrificial ceremony. And Chinese opera is called Xi Ju in Jinwen (inscriptions on ancient bronze objects). If you pay more attention on these Chinese ancient characters, you will find that they are hieroglyphics. So it will be clear that they express Xi Ju by showing the fighting scenes in the battle. At the same time, Huang Di created the ceremony of Nuo (one of Chinese local opera). Chi You, a god of war, becomes a pioneer who could let people free from disease and ghost. So, that is regarded as the beginning of ancient opera in China.
