Rediscussion on Epic of Zhou Nationality

  • The controversy about whether there is an epic in The Book of Songs starts from Hegel, and the conclusion of the so-called epic of Zhou nationality is gradually formed. In fact, there is no epic in The Book of Songs. Considering the definitions of epic by Aristotle, Marx, etc, and looking at the generality of classical epics, the so-called epics such as Song Gao, Zheng Min, Han Yi, Jiang Han, Chang Wu, etc. of the Zhou nationality have the following characteristics:fristly, without a concerted action; secondly, without the three elements of epic; thirdly, without interaction of gods and people; and fourthly, without the purpose of creating epics at all. These poems are the narrative temple songs of the Zhou people commemorating their ancestors.
